Introduction to Surah Maryam
Ninety-eight verses, Meccan, nineteenth in the written order. It is the only chapter in the Qur’an named for a woman, and the only woman named in the Qur’an is the one it is named for.
Before the Negus
The traditional accounts attach this surah to a specific occasion. When a group of Muslims took refuge in Abyssinia to escape the persecution in Mecca, the Quraysh sent a delegation to the Christian king asking for them back. The king asked the refugees to account for themselves, and Ja’far ibn Abi Talib recited this surah — the passage on Mary and her son. The king is reported to have wept and to have refused the extradition.
Whatever the details, the choice of passage makes sense. The surah says a great deal about Jesus that a Christian would recognise and one thing he would not, and it says both without hedging.
What it contains
Three births open it, and each is impossible in a different way. Zachariah, old, with a wife past bearing, asking quietly — the surah says he called on his Lord in secret — and given John. Mary, withdrawing to a place in the east, visited, and told that a son will come to her though no man has touched her. And then the birth itself, which the Qur’an places not in a stable but under a palm tree in pain and isolation, with Mary saying she wishes she had died before this and been forgotten.
She is told to shake the tree, to eat and drink and cool her eye, and to speak to no one. When she brings the child to her people and they accuse her, she points at the infant, and the infant speaks:
“I am indeed a servant of Allah: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet; “And He hath made me blessed wheresoever I be, and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live; (19:30–31)
The first word out of his mouth is servant. That is the line the surah is built to arrive at, and a few verses later it states directly that it is not befitting God to take a son.
The second half
After the birth narratives the surah turns to Abraham and his father, in one of the gentlest confrontations in the Qur’an — Abraham addressing him as my father four times while dismantling everything he believes, and being threatened with stoning for it, and replying with peace and a promise to pray for him.
It closes on a run of short, hard verses about generations that came after the prophets and let the prayer go, and on a line stating that those who believe and do right will be given love by the Most Merciful.

Those were some of the prophets on whom Allah did bestow His Grace,- of the posterity of Adam, and of those who We carried (in the Ark) with Noah, and of the posterity of Abraham and Israel of those whom We guided and chose. Whenever the Signs of (Allah) Most Gracious were rehearsed to them, they would fall down in prostrate adoration and in tears.
These are they unto whom Allah showed favour from among the prophets, of the seed of Adam and of those whom We carried (in the ship) with Noah, and of the seed of Abraham and Israel, and from among those whom We guided and chose. When the revelations of the Beneficent were recited unto them, they fell down, adoring and weeping.
