Introduction to Surah As-Saff

Fourteen verses, Medinan, sixty-first in the written order. It is short, and it is built around one accusation.

The accusation

O ye who believe! Why say ye that which ye do not? Grievously odious is it in the sight of Allah that ye say that which ye do not. (61:2–3)

The Arabic in the second of these verses is stronger than the English carries — maqtan kabiran, a great hatefulness. It is among the most severe expressions in the Qur’an, and it is applied not to disbelief or to a crime but to the gap between what people announce and what they do.

The verse after it supplies the image the surah is named for: those who fight in His cause in ranks, as though they were a solid cemented structure. A rank works only if everyone in it stays where they said they would be.

Moses and Jesus

Two prophets are brought in, and both for the same reason. Moses asks his people why they vex him when they know he is God’s messenger to them. Jesus tells the Children of Israel that he is God’s messenger to them, confirming what came before him and bringing news of a messenger after him — and when he comes to them with clear signs they say it is evident sorcery.

Then the surah asks who is more wrong than one who invents a lie against God while being invited to Islam, and states that they intend to put out the light of God with their mouths.

How it ends

On the disciples. Jesus asks who will be his helpers in the cause of God, and the disciples answer that they will be. The surah says that a portion of the Children of Israel believed and a portion did not, and that the believers were given strength against their enemies and became the ones who prevailed.

The last verse turns the same question on the reader: be helpers of God, as the disciples were. The surah that opens by condemning people who say what they do not do closes by asking for a commitment.

Pickthall

And when Jesus son of Mary said: O Children of Israel! Lo! Be ye helpers of Allah: As said Jesus the son of Mary to the Disciples, “Who will be my helpers to (the work of) Allah?” Said the disciples, “We are Allah’s helpers!” then a portion of the Children of Israel believed, and a portion disbelieved: But We gave power to those who believed, against their enemies, and they became the ones that prevailed.

Pickthall

O ye who believe! Be Allah’s helpers, even as Jesus son of Mary said unto the disciples: Who are my helpers for Allah? They said: We are Allah’s helpers.
