Introduction to Surah Al-Waqi’ah

Ninety-six verses, Meccan, fifty-sixth in the written order. Al-waqi’ah means the thing that falls, or that lands — the event whose arrival is not in question.

The three groups

The surah opens on the earth shaken and the mountains crumbled to scattered dust, and then sorts everyone present into three. Those foremost, who are nearest. The companions of the right hand. The companions of the left hand. The sorting is done in the first fifteen verses and the rest of the surah takes each group in turn.

Of the first it says that they are a multitude from the earlier generations and a few from the later ones, which is not the arrangement a reader would expect. The descriptions that follow are sensory rather than moral — couches, cups from a flowing spring that gives no headache or intoxication, fruit, shade, water flowing constantly — and the surah says of that place that they will hear no idle talk there, only the word peace.

The turn

Then it stops describing the next world and asks about this one:

See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? (56:63–64)

Three questions in the same form follow. The water you drink — did you send it down from the rain-cloud, or did We? The fire you kindle — did you grow the tree that made it, or did We? Each one takes something the listener does with his own hands and asks where the part he did not do came from.

Of the seed, the surah adds a remark that is easy to miss: that if it were willed, the crop could be made dry and crumbling, and the farmers would be left saying they were in debt and deprived. The provision is not being described as automatic.

How it ends

On a death-bed. The soul reaches the throat, the people around are watching, and the surah says that God is nearer to him than they are, though they cannot see it — and then asks, if they are not going to be held to account, why they cannot bring the soul back.

A note on its use

There is a widespread practice of reciting Al-Waqi’ah for provision, resting on a narration that whoever recites it every night will never be afflicted by want (Mishkat al-Masabih 2181). That report is in none of the six canonical collections — it comes through al-Bayhaqi’s Shu’ab al-Iman — and hadith scholars have generally regarded it as weak. It is recorded here as a practice, not as a promise.
