Introduction to Surah As-Saffat
One hundred and eighty-two verses, Meccan, thirty-seventh in the written order. The verses are short and the rhyme is insistent; it is one of the surahs whose sound does much of its work.
The ranks
It opens on an oath sworn by those drawn up in ranks, who drive away and who recite a reminder. Most commentators take these to be the angels. The image matters because of what the Meccans were saying about angels: that they were female, and that they were daughters of God, and that they could be approached to intercede. The surah returns to this directly later on and asks whether God has daughters and they have sons — and notes that the same people buried their own daughters alive.
The sacrifice
Its most-read passage is Abraham’s dream and what he does about it. He tells the boy rather than acting on him:
he said: “O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!” (The son) said: “O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!” (37:102)
The son is not named in this passage. Muslim tradition overwhelmingly identifies him as Ishmael, on the strength of the verses that follow, which announce the good news of Isaac afterwards; a minority of early commentators held it to be Isaac. The Qur’an itself leaves the name out of the scene.
What is called for is stopped before it happens and replaced with a great sacrifice, and the surah says that this was the clear trial — naming the test as the thing that was asked, not the thing that was done.
The rest
Noah, Moses and Aaron, Elias, Lot, and Jonah, each briefly and each ending in rescue. The Jonah passage includes the line that if he had not been of those who glorify God, he would have stayed in the belly of the fish until the day of resurrection — which makes the glorification, rather than the rescue, the hinge of the story.
Between these sit long descriptions of the two ends, including a conversation in the Garden in which a man looks down and recognises someone he used to argue with on earth.

So they turned away from him, and departed.
And they turned their backs and went away from him.

Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand.
Then he attacked them, striking with his right hand.

Then came (the worshippers) with hurried steps, and faced (him).
And (his people) came toward him, hastening.

They said, “Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!”
They said: Build for him a building and fling him in the red-hotfire.

(This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!
And they designed a snare for him, but We made them the undermost.

So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.
So We gave him tidings of a gentle son.

Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: “O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!” (The son) said: “O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!”
And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.
فَلَمَّآ أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلْجَبِينِ
Falammaaa aslamaa wa tallahoo liljabeen
So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),
Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face,

For this was obviously a trial-
Lo! that verily was a clear test.
وَفَدَيْنَٰهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍۢ

And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:
Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ
Wa taraknaa ‘alaihi fil aakhireen
And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:
And We left for him among the later folk (the salutation):

And We gave him the good news of Isaac – a prophet,- one of the Righteous.
And we gave him tidings of the birth of Isaac, a prophet of the righteous.

We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and (some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.
And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their seed are some who do good, and some who plainly wrong themselves.
وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ

Again (of old) We bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron,
