Introduction to Surah Al-Mu’minun
One hundred and eighteen verses, Meccan, twenty-third in the written order. It opens with a definition and spends the rest of its length testing it.
The opening
The believers must (eventually) win through,- Those who humble themselves in their prayers; Who avoid vain talk; (23:1–3)
The list runs to seven items and it is entirely behavioural. Humility in prayer, turning away from idle talk, giving in charity, guarding chastity, keeping trusts and covenants, and guarding the prayers — which is the first item again, closing the list where it opened. There is no article of belief in it. The surah defines believers by what they do.
Nothing on the list requires favourable conditions, which is relevant to when it was revealed: a small community under pressure, with no institutions and no protection.
The argument
From there the surah turns to creation, and its account of the embryo — an extract of clay, then a drop in a place of rest, then a clot, then a lump, then bones, then the bones clothed with flesh — is one of the passages most discussed in modern writing on the Qur’an. In context it is an argument rather than a description: something already assembled this way once can be assembled again.
Then the prophets, briefly. Noah and the ark. A messenger after him to a people who said the same things the Meccans were saying — he is only a man like you, eating what you eat and drinking what you drink — and to whom the same answer came. Moses and Aaron. Jesus and his mother, given shelter on high ground with springs.
The surah notes that the communities which received all this then broke into sects, each pleased with what it had.
How it ends
The closing pages are a courtroom. The rejectors are asked how many years they stayed on earth, and answer that it was a day, or part of a day, and that the accountants would know better. They are asked whether the signs were not recited to them. They ask to be brought back to do right, and are told no. Then the surah asks whether they thought they were created for nothing and would not be returned — and stops there, on a question.

But the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: This is only a mortal like you who would make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels. We heard not of this in the case of our fathers of old.

So We inspired him (with this message): “Construct the Ark within Our sight and under Our guidance: then when comes Our Command, and the fountains of the earth gush forth, take thou on board pairs of every species, male and female, and thy family- except those of them against whom the Word has already gone forth: And address Me not in favour of the wrong-doers; for they shall be drowned (in the Flood).
Then We inspired in him, saying: Make the ship under Our eyes and Our inspiration. He will say: “What number of years did ye stay on earth?”
He will say: How long tarried ye in the earth, counting by years?
Qaaloo labisnaa yawman aw ba’da yawmin fas’alil ‘aaaddeen
They will say: “We stayed a day or part of a day: but ask those who keep account.”
They will say: We tarried by a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep count!
Qaala il labistum illaa qaleelal law annakum kuntum ta’lamoon
He will say: “Ye stayed not but a little,- if ye had only known!
He will say: Ye tarried but a little if ye only knew.
Afahsibtum annamaa khalaqnaakum ‘abasanw wa annakum ilainaa laa turja’oon
“Did ye then think that We had created you in jest, and that ye would not be brought back to Us (for account)?”
Deemed ye then that We had created you for naught, and that ye would not be returned unto Us?
Fata’aalal laahul Malikul Haqq; laaa ilaaha illaa Huwa Rabbul ‘Arshil Kareem
Therefore exalted be Allah, the King, the Reality: there is no god but He, the Lord of the Throne of Honour!
Now Allah be Exalted, the True King! There is no Allah save Him, the Lord of the Throne of Grace.
Wa mai yad’u ma’allaahi ilaahan aakhara laa burhaana lahoo bihee fa innnamaa hisaabuhoo ‘inda Rabbih; innahoo laa yuflihul kaafiroon
If anyone invokes, besides Allah, Any other god, he has no authority therefor; and his reckoning will be only with his Lord! and verily the Unbelievers will fail to win through!
He who crieth unto any other god along with Allah hath no proof thereof. His reckoning is only with his Lord. Lo! disbelievers will not be successful.
Wa qur Rabbigh fir warham wa Anta khairur raahimeen
So say: “O my Lord! grant Thou forgiveness and mercy for Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!”
And (O Muhammad) say: My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, for Thou art Best of all who show mercy.
