Introduction to Surah Al-Kafirun

Six verses, Meccan, one hundred and ninth in the written order. It is built out of two sentences repeated with small variations, and the repetition is the substance of it.

What it refuses

Traditional accounts describe a proposal from the Meccan leadership: a shared arrangement in which each side would take up the other’s worship for a period, alternating, so that the dispute would be dissolved rather than won. The offer was a settlement, and it was reasonable on its own terms.

The surah declines it four times. I do not worship what you worship; nor do you worship what I worship; nor will I worship what you have worshipped; nor will you worship what I worship. The tenses shift between the pairs — present and then past and future — which is why commentators have generally read the repetition as closing off the proposal in each of its possible forms rather than as emphasis.

The last line

To you your religion, and to me mine.

What the surah does not do is as notable as what it does. There is no threat in it, no description of consequence, and no instruction to interfere with what the other party does. It refuses the merger completely and then leaves them to it.

A note on its use

Nawfal was told by the Prophet to recite it and then sleep at the end of it, since it is a declaration of freedom from idolatry (Sunan Abi Dawud 5055, graded sahih). It is also paired with Al-Ikhlas in the two units before the dawn prayer (Sahih Muslim 726). The pairing is very old and both halves of it are well attested.
